William Safire. . .

Is retiring . Despite the fact that I hate his column with a passion and that I sometimes think he must be braindead to write what he writes, I will kind of miss him, in a weird, masochistic way. He is a necessary evil at the Times, and I doubt whoever replaces him will be nearly as good at playing that role.

More to come later.

As much as I disagree with William Safire's politics, I agree with you that his column will be missed. While he seemed to be the devil's advocate of the Times op-ed page, he was absolutely vital to furthering the op-ed ethos: that is, the publication of varying and dissenting opinions. And although his "On Language" column has become more political as of late (with thinly veiled jabs at John Kerry), it is still an entertaining and (occasionally) funny article. I guess Republicans can have a sense of humor...
